Plant selection

Question
Brandon,
We have a new house with no landscaping done, have an area in corner of front yard, up next to house that gets very little sun. We are putting a fountain there and need some suggestions or ideas of what ground cover (no ivy) and plants/flowers would work best. We live in East, Tx -- have sandy soil but good drainage. Also would a dwarf crepe myrtle grow in the shade with morning sun only? Thanks for your time. Stephanie

Answer
Hey there :)

Creeping Phlox is nice.  (I deff agree with the 'no ivy'!)  You can go to tinyurl.com/y62t7a8
for a list of ground cover ideas and pictures.  Also look at Alyssum and Tapien.

I'd be a little hesitant with the Crepe Myrtle in that location--they like a lot of sun.  Depending on how tall the fountain is, I'd put a evergreen shrub circling the base of it--like a cherry laurel or holly heleri, then something flowering in front of that, then your ground cover after that, maybe a small bench with stepping stones, and whatever else.

Have fun!
