landscaping design

Question
I'm working on my landscaping around my front yard and side.  I had a difficulty to choose the perennials at both side.  My house face southwest, so one side has sun from morning to almost 3:00pm, the other side won't have sun until 2:00pm, and have afternoon sun after.  The area of side are narrow.  I planted some Lilly, but looks really boring.  I also plant Azelea, and it died.  I tried hosta, and didn't go well either.  I'd like have some easy maintain preennials with followers around the side.  It is better have them blooming in diff time.  Also, looks diff, for eg, diff color of leaves.  Would you please give me some recommandation for both side?

Thanks
Evelyn
