Clay soil

Question
We built a new home a year ago. The location of our home was a field for many, many years. The front of the house the soil is hard like clay. Nothing grows in in to well. I need to know what you suggest for materials. I want to have perrinals, and trees around this area.

Answer
Gail,

You need a change the soil structure before you plant your perennials, tree, and such.

You need to add organic material to the clay soil.  Compost and peat moss are two good choice.  Also grnulated gypsum, not lime, will help.  Till this material into the areas where you want your ornamental plants.  I would not do the areas where you may want grass as the grass plants will adapt to the clay soil structure.

Good luck in the garden.

Gary
