Building raised flowerbeds

Question
Hi There,

We have a small back yard - really just a patio with bricks over most of it with some small flowerbeds on either side.  We're considering putting in a long, raised flowerbed along the length of the fence in back as well as along the side.  We're thinking about just pulling up two rows of bricks, then lining similar bricks up on either side all the way to about 3-4 feet high and then filling the raised beds with soil.  Will this work or do we need to put some sort of liner in to keep dirt, roots, etc., from coming out of the sides of the flowerbeds?  Any advice you have or resources you can recommend would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Answer
David,

What a fun project.

I would not use the bricks just for stability issues for the wall of the flowerbed.  I would use some of the Anchor type block that is produced by Pavestone or other block companies.  With these type of blocks you will get stability and not have to worry about dirt or flower roots coming out between the blocks.

Head down to you local homecenter and look at some of the available block for color, texture, etc.

Good luck

Gary
