Erosion on Slope in NM

Question
Hey Russel, After the installation of a sewer line on a steeply-sloped lot we are not surprised to see erosion.  We put some lengths of silt fence across the area, drug in some long branches, anything to slow that water down during the monsoon season.  How can we replant this 100' long area to stem the tide?  We are at 7000' elevation in Ruidoso, NM  Thank you.  Lu

Answer
Hey, Lu.

Ah, Ruidoso. Been there many times. Pleasant memories.

I think you're using the silt fence improperly, but without visiting your property I can't know for sure. Nonetheless, I think you'd be much better off by using some some landscape fabric. It comes in many types, styles, and sizes, and you can spread it out on the ground and then cut holes in it to plant vegetation that ultimately will fill in the hillside.

See this web site for useful information to help you choose the best fabric for your hillside and goals: http://www.weedbarrier.com/erosion_control_and_contractor_supplies.html
