Thanks Carlo!
I have idea why the tree died, I bought the House last June, I just pay attention to the tree this May, no green leaves, branches are easily broken. Check out the pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/atlanta2004/
The third picture is related to my 2nd question, part of this shurb has no leaves, I don't know why, it get full sun and watering.
Thanks again!

-----Question-----
My Japanese Zelkova is dead, I'm going to cut. How can I remove root? Can I plant same tree at same spot? Many thanks!
-----Answer-----
Hi there!
You should dig around the trunk as deep as needed.
Zelkovas are very hard and maybe you should hire a professional to do it.

Before planting a new zelkova on the same spot you should make sure that there are no diseases in the soil.
To identify the cause of death you should take a sample of the dead tree to the Cooperative Extension in your area.
Would you be able to describe how the tree died?
Do you have any pictures that you could send me?

Carlo

-----Answer-----
It seems to me that your tree has died of a fungus disease called "leaf curl" (Taphrina ulmi). If you still want a zelkova on the same spot, you should try a variety that is resistant to this disease.
The other shrubs seem to be affected by something called bacterial blight (Corynebacterium ilicis). It is sometimes caused by the excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers and excessive cultivation under the shrubs. Cutting the affected area and applying a good fungicide should take care of it.

Good Luck!

Answer
Hi there!

There are certain fungicides that could be applied to the soil but I believe that they are not sold to the public, only to professionals.
I do not know what the rules are in your state but I think that they are the same all over the country.
You'll probably need a certified applicator to do it.

Good luck!

Carlo
