shrub ideas for shady area

Question
Hi Charles - thank you for giving me some advice. I live in Denver, CO and would like to replace some juniper bushes which are under a tree in our backyard.  So, we are looking for a 3-4' high bush without thorns, evergreen or not, which can handle somewhat dry conditions in a shaded area.  I would also love something with some color or other appeal to it if possible.  Do you have any ideas?  Thank you!

Answer
Hello Peggy,

I would suggest planting perennials and groundcovers such as epimedium, hosta, fern, and lily of the valley. You can condition the soil in this area to make these plants thrive with composted soil(earth life) peat moss, screened topsoil and a high quality triple shredded hardwood mulch(no dyes) Shrubs: Witchhazel, mountain laurel, rhododendron, clethra, fothergila.  Hope this helped
