privacy plants

Question
QUESTION: I am looking for some kind of plant that I can place near my property line to give me some privacy.  I live very close to my neighbors and do not have a huge yard so it would be ideal if this plant did not take up a lot of room.  It would be best if the plant was relatively low maintenance--I don't want to have to trim huge hedges every two weeks.  Thanks so much for your time and advice.

ANSWER: Hello,

Please provide your zip code so I can find your growing zone. I'm sure I can help you out.

Namaste,
Kathy

Answer
Hi Kathy,

If you are looking for a privacy screen keep in mind that many of the plants are moderate growers. This means that you will not have true privacy until they have been established for at least 2-3 years. The quality of your soil will also have an influence on how fast your plants will grow so make sure you till and add amendments, while keeping the bed well mulched.

With that in mind and your space requirements I thought Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) would work really well for you.

This hardy plant has lacy green leaves on upright cane-like stems that turn brilliant red in autumn. Creamy flowers are followed by clusters of red berries. They are particularly good for narrow spaces. It is an evergreen plant that preferes full to partial sun. It is considered a moderate grower to 6 to 8 feet tall, 3 feet wide.

At it's base, try planting a staggered dense mass of mixed Lilyturf and Mondo grass. This would look really attractive.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding these plant suggestions as they are staples at most nurseries and garden centers.

If you have any questions please feel free to get back to me :-)Have fun.

Namaste,
Kathy
