Question
had to dig out root entwined PVC.  Since hooking it back together all zones are all on at the same time regardless of detaching all 4 zone wires at the Hardie controller.  I cleaned the valves[4 pronged fawcet/diaphragmtype] and I tried your opening all the way and then go half technique but even turning the valves off at several stations doesn't even shut anything down. Did I reconnect things wrong from the water line in or am I missing something else?  Help

It sounds more like a wiring problem to me.  You may want to start by redoing all the electrical connections at the valves.  Make sure that each valve has a common wire connection, and that the valve wire connections are good.  It is possible that the wires have been damaged in the process of your repair.  If nothing else works you may want to replace the wiring.
