How deep should I make my raised bed

Question
I am planning on starting a vegetable garden this year. I have quite a bit of top soild left over from  a delivery I had received last year. The issue is: I have very sandy soil, and the area where I want to build my vegetable garden has been treated as lawn area for several years - the standard mix of pesticides and fertilizers. What would be the minimum depth i would need for various types of vegetables if I lay my top soil on top of the prior lawn area. I am considering some roots vegetables (such as carrots) as well as surface vegies. Maybe even some corn.
What do you recommend in terms of bed depth and types of vegetables I shoud limit my self to (if any)
Thanks
Jerry in Saratoga County New York

Answer
Dear Jerry:
If your soil is very sandy I do not think it is a good idea to raise the bed because the soil will be very dry. My suggestion is to divide the garden into small bed about 3 feet wide. Only raise the edge of the beds about half foot. Step the edge to make it firm. Put the top soil inside and mix them with the oranginal one. Then you can transplant or sow seeds.

I wish I could be there to show you how to do it.

Thank you so much.
