Bad tasting tomatoes

Question
This is my first year as a gardener, and I thought I had successfully
grown some beautiful tomatoes, until I ate one of them. They are
very tart/acidic, and a couple of them have actually hurt my mouth
a little when I eat them. I used Miracle Grow on them at the
beginning of the season, but nothing else. Is there something
wrong/imbalanced with my soil?

Answer
Dear Laura,
It sounds like your soil has a pH imbalance.  Tomatoes tend to be very acidic anyway.  We never use any chemical growing products, but we do prepare the garden spot in the fall.  We use chicken liter and mulched corn stalks plus after the frost, we cut down all of the foliage and leave it to be snowed and rained into the soil.  Low acid fruit peels make wonderful compost for the garden spot, as well.
It will be better next year, I'm sure.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
