Cold frames

Question
I am starting seeds in a Jiffy starter tray and live in extreme northern Ohio- they are just barely emerging. I do not have room inside for flourescent lights or putting by a window after they sprout but plenty of room outside. I plan on building a hooped 4' x 8' cold frame this weekend. The starter trays have only sphagnum peat moss.Growing Tomatoes-lettuce-brocolli.. My question is this - Should I transplant to a larger container (what size, and type(s) of medium?)..How large should the plants be when put in cold frame for the light and protection or can I put them in there now? The plan I saw had 2 closed ends but an automatic opening vent (lower then 45 degrees then it closes) on one end. I plan on then transplanting from cold frame to garden in late May. I work from noon to 9pm most days so I hope on some sunny days the vent will not allow the temperture to rise to high because I cant' be there to raise the sides. Do you think this will work??

Answer
Seedlings only need to be transplanted to a larger container if the root system becomes crowded or mangled. If the seedlings are not started too soon, this is not necessary.

One exception is tomato plants. They actually benefit from being transplanted to a larger pot. I transplant mine 1" lower each time. This forces the tomatoes to produce root nodules at the base of the stem. The result is healthier plants with higher production.

In regard to the cold frame, you can transfer the plants once they develop their fourth set of leaves. At this point, they are mature enough to withstand the change in environment. You definitely want to use a system that opens the frame automatically based on temperature. I've used an automatic opener for years and have never lost a plant due to overheating. These devices are not very expensive and are very efficient. Attached is a link to a site from which you can purchase one if you haven't already.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
