tomato plants - science fair project

Question
I am doing a science fair project and would like to compare the effectiveness of a homemade fertilizer using commong household products(? tea, coffee, sugar, ect) and a commercial product on the growth of tomato plants. The reason I am interested in looking into this is that I know that common fertilizers high in phosphates have a detrimental effect on our fresh water causing excessive algae growth. What household products can be combined and in what quantities to create the homemade fertilizers? Thanks for your help. Kim

Answer
Kim,
I'm totally organic.  I use manure, chicken litter, and old hay.  No specific proportion to each other, and plenty of rich soil.  I also allow the ground to rest every 7 years.
I've used coffee grounds on some of my plants from time to time and I know of people who use sugar, but I can't give any idea of how they compare.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
