Tomatoes in HOT! climate.

Question
Mike, I have grown indeterminate Tomatoes in Phx, AZ for the past 5 yrs. I put out seedlings in March and get some nice production from May until early June when it gets too hot for fruit set. Plants do well until late August but no fruit. Would I be better off to try determinate? I was thinking I might have a heavy crop before it gets so hot. That would be OK for me as I grow to make %26 freeze sauce for fall %26 winter. I have never grown Determinate Tomatoes. Thanks, Hal

Answer
Hal, determinate tomatoes would definitely be a solution to your problem. I personally grow 6 to 8 plants with a variation on the varieties. Normally I grow 2 determinates, 2 indeterminates, and 2-4 paste plants for salsa and sauce. This combination gives you a constant supply of tomatoes throughout the growing season. If you have the room, that would be my recommendation.

Good luck, and enjoy your warm weather. Gardening is only a dream this time of year here in Ohio.

Best reards,

Mike
