solution/mixture for tomatoes please?

Question
Hi Kenneth,  I am doing some experimenting,  and wondered if you could please tell me what the solution/mixture would be for tomatoes?  Would appreciate your sharing your knowledge as able.  Have a great sunny day.  Garland

Answer
The best choice for tomatoes is a fertilizer with relatively modest levels of nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium.

Fertilizers comes with 3 numbers prominently displayed on the package, such as 15-30-15, 10-2-6, 5-10-10, 20-20-20, etc.

The optimum combination for tomatoes are 5-10-10. If you can not find these, then similar products like 9-12-12 may be available. You can also look for all purpose 10-10-10 fertilizer.

When tomatoes develop, relatively large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are consumed in the process of developing fruits. These two compounds are represented by the 2nd and 3rd numbers respectively. Nitrogen (the first number) can actually result in very tall, lush green plants but with small fruits. This is why the first number is usually lower than the other two for tomatoes.

Good luck.
