Bring Living Color to Your Table

What makes a recipe good: simplicity, sophistication and the ability to share it. In The Plant Recipe Book, Baylor Chapman brings 100 delectable recipes to the table, in the forms of living centerpieces and sides. Chapman was gracious enough to share one with us — just enough to whet your appetite.

This particular “dish” calls for a Masdevallia orchid and a shallow serving bowl. But, as with all recipes, there’s room for improvisation. If you can’t find either ingredient, Chapman suggests choosing items with a similar size and shape.

Photography by Paige Green by Artisan Books Artisan Books Materials:
  • One 6-inch and three 4-inch Masdevallia orchids
  • Two-toned ceramic bowl, 13 inches in diameter (this one’s from Heath Ceramics)
  • 3 cups orchid mix
  • 3 feet coated wire
  • One 12-inch square sheet moss
by Artisan Books Artisan Books 1. With a two-tone container, you’ll be able to see both the inside and outside colors of the bowl. Mound the orchid mix in the center of the bowl, making sure the inside color is visible. Unpot the biggest orchid and place it in the center of the bowl. Gently pat down the orchid so it will stay put. by Artisan Books Artisan Books 2. Fill in with the remaining orchids. They’ll want to flop; gently tamp the soil to keep them upright. by Artisan Books Artisan Books 3. Unroll the coated wire and wrap it around the base of your plants. This will help them stay upright. Put the final touches on the plants by pushing and pulling them into place. Wrap a smooth layer of moss around the base so that it forms a perfect circle. Keep the arrangement moist and cool. by Artisan Books Artisan Books This arrangement can be used indoors or out, but keep it cool and out of direct sun. Mist it as needed.
