Riding Mower Parts

There are many different kinds of riding lawn mowers, but most of these are based on the same basic model. Different engines, bodies, and styles may make it look like there is a large variety among lawn mowers. By all means, there are worlds of difference in quality and effectiveness between mowers, but there are a few parts that are consistent between all mowers.

A Basic Mower Anatomy

The heart of a rider mower is the engine. This is usually a basic combustion engine that runs on diesel or unleaded fuel. Very similar to a car engine, it provides the force that both spins the mower blades and turns the tires to drive the mower. The engine is usually located in front of or below the seat, and above the mower deck and blades.

The mower deck is the part of the mower closest to the ground, and is where the work of the mower gets done. The mower blades are housed within the deck, as are the belts and pulleys that cause them to spin. This system is what causes the engine's force to be transferred to the blades, and the case of the mower deck is the primary safety feature on a riding mower.

Finally, the rest of the mower is where you see the most variation in style. The seat, tires, steering wheel, gas, and brakes are arranged in a logical fashion so that the driver has complete control over the machine at all times. More complicated mowers may have jointed bodies or other improvements that allow them to turn more smoothly.
