Composting With A Plastic Storage Container

Composting in a small area is possible as there are many ways in doing it. Plastic storage containers are great materials for making a compost bin if you have a limited space in your area. You can use the finished compost in your garden or just basically to compost and save the environment.

Making your own compost bin by using a plastic storage container might sound like a hard job to do, however this is actually an easy task and requires quite a little of your time in making one. As a matter of fact, you can finish yours in just 30 minutes or less.

The only thing that you will need when making a compost bin is your plastic storage bin and a driller for the holes. Make sure that the plastic storage container you get is not too small as the bigger your bin is the better it is for composting. The more lids you can have the better it is for your compost bin as you get to catch the nutrients-filled liquid that leaks out of the holes of your bin. You wouldn't want these to get wasted.

Prepare your plastic bin by cleaning its former contents off to make it ready for drilling. You need to drill plenty of holes around the bin as composting needs a good air circulation as this is beneficial in making your decomposing of organic materials faster. There is no standard when it comes to the required size of hole in your bin as long as they are not too big for rodents to come inside as you don't want rats to eat the fruits and vegetables that you threw in your compost bin. In case you accidentally made larger holes, you can always use wire mesh or any inexpensive material that can be used to prevent rodents from invading your bin.

The location of your bin should also be planned as you would want it to be accessible to cut the effort of handling. Although some people set up their compost bin in their kitchen for easy access when you need to throw your kitchen and food wastes, some people just can't tolerate the smell of the bin that's why we advise you to put yours outside. Place your compost container bin near your garden as most compost bins are place there. This allows you to easily get the finished product when it is available for use.

When you have your compost bin installed in your preferred location, you can now start filling it with anything that is biodegradable and can be useful as compost materials. You can actually add almost anything as long as it doesn't include plastic or anything that won't decompose.

You need to turn the inside of your compost bin in order to make the process of composting faster. This can be done by shaking your plastic bin daily or when needed depending on the condition of your container bin. When you see that the contents are already the finished products, you can now use them as fertilizer on your garden.
