Most Bonsai experts will recommend that you purchase some specialist tools for creating your Bonsai trees. Most Bonsai tools are not very expensive and you can buy them easily over the internet or at a hardware store. Here's a list of the essential Bonsai toolkit tools:
Concave Cutters
These cutters are very important in your kit. This is the tool that you will use to cut of branches so that you don't leave that big a mark on the side. Using scissors will leave a bit welt and if it's a large branch you will need these cutters to get the perfect snip.
Scissors
Another pair of just ordinary scissors will be important for you to use. The sharper the better so please don't just them for anything else other then Bonsai work (this applies to all your tools). You will use these scissors for general odds and ends like trimming off leaves, removing small branches and other elements of the tree that you don't need.
Tweezers
Tweezers are another tool that you should not live without. Tweezers are also used for removing elements that you don't want from your tree. They are especially helpful for the fine detail that is required (particularly towards the end of the major work on your Bonsai). Tweezers are something that you shouldn't live without when doing Bonsai. Rather strangely it seems the more precision tools you have, the better the Bonsai (tweezers as opposed to say, loppers).
Wire Cutters
If you do any form of wiring (and you will probably do a small amount of it) you will need a specialist pair of Bonsai wire cutters. DO NOT skimp on this step and just use pliers. The wire is left on the tree for quite some time before you remove it and the tree can almost grow around it. Using a set of special wire cutters will mean that you are able to cut right next to the tree to remove the wiring. This will mean you don't need to damage your tree.
As I mentioned above, please don't use the items in your Bonsai toolkit for anything else then Bonsai work. I'm a minimalist at heart and if I don't need something extra then I would prefer not to buy it. That said, skimping on your toolkit will cost you in the long run. A well sharped, well stocked Bonsai toolkit will mean that you can don't need to worry about running around your house finding tools. It's all there, when you want to work with the Bonsai.
