What Type Of Flagpole Serves Your Needs?

Flagpoles may not be standard outside every house but they are very helpful when you want to declare your love for the country or fly a flag that highlights your beliefs. Whatever they're used for, flagpoles are grouped into three categories, residential, commercial and telescopic.

Residential flagpoles are not necessarily small but they don't withstand high wind speeds as well as the commercial variety. They can span anything from six feet to 35 feet. Remember that the taller the pole, the weaker it will be in strong winds. Commercial flagpoles usually have a single section which makes them sturdier. Most are built to withstand very strong winds. Telescopic poles, meanwhile, are adjustable in that they can be raised or lowered. This feature comes at a price, however, as they're relatively weak under gusts of wind.

What to look for in a pole

The height of a pole depends on what you deem is high enough. The more important factor is sections with more sections meaning weaker points. Think of a gutter system and how sectional varieties are prone to leakage. The same principle applies to flagpoles but instead of water, it's wind you have to contend with.

Halyard system

The next important point is the halyard system which is what allows a flag to be raised and lowered. An external halyard has the rig located outside the pole while an internal system is in-built. Both serve their purpose well but if the pole is intended to be erected in an area prone to vandalism, an internal halyard is a better choice.

In-ground, wall-mount, nautical

In-ground, wall-mount and nautical types are the next areas of concern. Most poles are in-ground but smaller flags or lack of space means you can choose wall-mounted varieties. These typically don't fly large flags and are best for urban gardening and advertising. Nautical poles are meant for harbors and docksides. Multiple flags can be flown from a single pole.

Aluminum and fiberglass

Flagpoles are generally made of aluminum as they're subjected to moisture and heat. They don't rust fast and last long. If you're looking for a more expensive and high-end option, there are fiberglass poles which offer many benefits. The best way to make a choice is to ascertain the weather conditions of your locale. Aluminum poles are great for windy regions and if cost is a factor. Fiberglass works well for places where acid rain occurs as it doesn't rust like metal.

Color

Color options are varied though fiberglass is generally white (it can be painted in any color). Aluminum, on the other hand, is available in several finishes such as bronze, black, silver etc.

Ornamentation

Flagpoles can be given an appearance boost with ornamentation. Toppers are a common example which can take on any figure and shape. A ball topper is popular as are birds, stars, crosses, spears etc. Lights are another option where the flag is illuminated by a bulb installed on top. This choice is usually opted when a country's flag is intended to be flown at night. The light ensures that the flag is visible from a distance even if the pole is shadowed. If lights are chosen, they must be installed by a licensed electrician as bulbs should be secure and not prone to fuse.
