Pixie Pink Italian Heather Plant

Question
Hi,

My mother received this plant for mother's day... With no instructions on how to care for it... We live in South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach... What should we do to care for this plant to ensure it a long healthy plant life for years to come and mom to enjoy?  Leave in pot or plant outside? I believe I am in Plant Zone 8-B..

Thanks in advance, Robin

Answer
Hi Robin,
Thanx for your question.  The Pixie Pink Italian Heather is Erica ventricosa.  It is only hardy to 28F.  Your Myrtle Beach climate is probably going to be okay to put plant this outdoors.  Coastal South Carolina should be mild enough.  If you're going to plant it outdoors, plant it in slightly acidic soil and keep it moist but not soggy.  Plant it where it will get some afternoon shade.  These plants are best adapted to cool but not frosty conditions and can suffer from too much heat and humidity.  If you decide to treat is as a potted houseplant, maintain acidity by treating with Miracid or some other acidic fertilizer following the diretions on the fertilizer box.  Keep it watered and keep it shaded in the afternoon.  Put it outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.  I hope this helps.
Tom
