Difference between top soil and garden mix

Question
Hi

I'm trying to regrow my lawn. I dug up all the grass and lost some soil. I'm planning to replenish the soil and wonder what kind of soil I should get. I need about 4-5" inch of soild. There are top soil and garden mix that are sold in local gardening center. What are the differences between them? Can I use garden mix soil to grow new lawn?
What soils id the best to regrow new lawn?

thanks

Answer
Hi Ray,  I don't know what their topsoil or garden mix is made from, but I'd choose the coarser of the two.  You can't lay down a new layer of soil on top of your existing soil and expect very good results. Apply the 4" you need, then it must be tilled into the top 4" of your existing soil for a blended layer 8"-10" deep.  Then you are ready to seed or sod your new lawn.  Don't forget to check the pH after you've tilled.  It should be around 6.5 for good turf production.  Jim
