Question
I have a small pond that I would like to put a few goldfish in.  The pond is about 55 gallons. My pond gets no shade except from the plants in the pond.  I live in El Paso, TX and the sun will be very intense  this summer with outdoor temps up to 105 is common.  Nights in turn, can get dip into the low 60's.  Is this too much heat and temperature variation to have goldfish survive?  If not, how many fish for a 55 gallon tank do you suggest?  Thanks for your help.

Hi Kathy,
Thanx for your question.  Regular gold fish should not have a problem in your West Texas climate.  Some of the fancy ones like lion heads, orandas and others may develop respiratory distress from the warmer water.  I wouldn't put more than ten gold fish in the pond.  They will get pretty big quickly so 10 ought to be enough.  Buy some floating plants like water hyacinth or water lettuce.  This will help shade the water.  I hope this helps.
