water lilly dirt in fish pond

Question
Last year I transplanted my water lily in just plain sand. They grew but the leaves died and became slimy shortly after reaching the top of the water. I had 4 young koi and a gold fish which I finally lost all but one koi. What kind of dirt should my water lily's be in that would not affect the fish, and would let the lilys keep their pads. My pond is an outdoor 110 gallon tank.  Thanks you. Alberta

Answer
Hey Alberta, they sell special soil for water plants at Lowes. I use it and it works great. It looks like cat litter. You can also use plain dirt with some big rock to weight it down. Now the Koi you have will eat some of your plants. They are known for that. Goldfish, not as much. Thanks Eric
