mexican petunias

Question
I have blue and pink mexican petunias.  Are they suppose to bloom pink flowers.  Also are the really perennials.  I live in Florida and do landscaping.  Some of the house have these plants and they were dead in the winter.

Answer
Dear Leah

Thank you for your question.

Some petunias are described as perennials or half hardy perennials (meaning that they die down in the winter and have to be kept under cover and frost free and put outside again in late spring).  I can't say that I've ever been able to keep plants from one year to the next!

They are also prone to a lot of diseases and attacked by a large variety of pests, so they are  mostly used as annual bedding plants for window boxes and hanging baskets and discarded at the end of the growing season.

Finally - petunias come in lots of colors including  many shades of pink.
