Cally lily color

Question
Hello,
I live in New Jersey
I purchased a pot of red Callas lilies (Zentedeschia) in a supermarket in early February. The pot is next to the window and it gets light all day.  The label did not specify which grower it came from.
The plant had 4 healthy dark red lilies. Then 5 more lilies appeared, but these are light yellow with pink borders. Do you know why the new flowers did not grow red? Should I have fed them any special food?  Should I move them from the light? is it possible that some cold air seeps from the window and hurts them? I still have 6 flowers in the pot, they seem to be fine and healthy.
What to do with them after they fade?
Should I put them in dark basement and let the pot dry?

Thank you so much.
I love that plant and would love for it to come back next year.
Any advice will be appreciated greatly.

best Regards

Answer
Hi Nina,
Thanx for your question.  Your pot may have more than one rhizome in it which would have resulted in other plants blooming another color.  There is also the possibility that the plant lacked some nutrient which caused the red to fade out.  Make sure you use some fertilizer rated for plants like calla lilies.  A 20-20-20 balanced fertilizer is recommended.  Follow the instructions on the package.  Make sure they are getting direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day and that the soil is moist but not soggy in a well-ventilated environment.  When the blooms fade, the plant may form seed pods.  Cut these off, as they drain the plant of energy and you really don't want to start plants from hybrid seeds because in general, the results will be inferior to the parent plants.  The foliage will begin to fade and when it turns yellow, gently cut if from the plant and store the entire pot in a cool, dark, dry basement watering only enough to keep the soil from drying completely out but you don't exactly want it moist either as this could casue rot.  After about 3 months, the plant should show signs of beginning to reemerge.  Bring the pot back to a warm, sunny area.  Begin watering and feeding.  If it has not re-emerged just wait a few weeks and it will come forth.  I hope this helps.
Tom
