King Cymbidium pale white with pink /magenta in the middle

Question
Dear Wayne,

I was given this king orchid as a gift and had it in south window getting morning., afternoon light.  The buds had just started to open.
And then i realized that some are falling off. The soil is plenty wet. My house gets to about 60 at night. Any suggestions. There are 5 stems and 1 has fully opened. The others have some trying to open.

thanks Brandi Ching Wheeler

Answer
Brandi, it is not unusual to lose some buds on a newly acquired plant.  Just a brief exposure to cold or other conditions which are different from its regular environment could produce this.   The fact that one spike has opened is good news. There are a number of other reasons why some buds abort. It may be that the potting mix has remained too wet causing some roots to rot.  Once rot has set in, the parts of the plant that are served by those roots (the buds are the most sensitive) will fail to develop normally.  Sounds like you are growing the plant under the right conditions.  When flowering has finished, you need to be certain that you repot the plant in fresh orchid potting mix in a well drained pot.  When you unpot the plant, prepatory to repotting, rinse off the roots and remove any that are mushy before repotting. I suspect that, at this point, root damage is minimal and I would expect most of the remaining buds will develop normally.  It does take time for these buds to develop and open so patience is the word.
