Star Jasmine Plant

Question
Hello Darlene

I have a Star Jasmine for the first time this year.  It is in a 12 inch pot, and about 3 feet tall, growing on a trellis.  It's a lovely plant, I had it outside in morning sun, shady afternoon and it bloomed continuously thru the summer.  I do know it has to come inside for the winter here (zone 5) but I'm not sure what I need to do.  Should I repot?  If yes, in what kind of soil.  Also, what are the light requirements indoor for the winter?

Thanks Darlene, look forward to hearing from you.

Wendy

Answer
Wendy,

Absolutley do not repot the plant. You should only repot plants in the spring. Besides that a 12" pot should be adequate forever. Simply bring the plant indoors and set it in the sunniest south facing window possible and keep the drapes or miniblinds open all day. Indoors the sun is never as bright as outdoors so this plant needs as much sun as possible. Fertilize it regularly except not in December and January. It will still have shorter days during the winter so it will gradually stop blooming. In the spring when it is time for it to go outdoors again give it a tablespoon or epsom salts. This is magnesium sulfate and it will help it start blooming again in the spring. I live in zone 5 also. Getting your plants enough light during the winter is the biggest problem. Also be careful not to overwater. Let the soil get dry on the top 1-2 inches before watering again. More houseplants are killed by too much water than by too little. Good luck with your Star jasmine.
