Orchid Cactus

Question
I was given a Orchid Cactus last year, I think it was also called King Minus....
I live in Alaska and the plant is in I think a south east window, I noticed small wandering jew like starts coming up in the soil, they are hard to describe.  The larger one is purple underneath and shiny/healthy green with some purple highlights on top.  I do not know what it is or how it managed to get there, there are at least 7 poking out now and they grow fairly fast. Does not look like a weed.  Do you have any idea??

Answer
Heather,

No, I am not sure what it is but it sounds like you may be right about it being a wandering jew. It could also be from the maranta (prayer plant) family.  I suggest that you water the plant then try to carefully remove the 7 little plants and pot them up in a separate pot. Using a butter knife may help you remove them. I suspect that the previous owner of the orchid cactus used old soil from a dead plant to pot the cuttings in and the old plant was not as dead as he/she thought. It is now sprouting. However the two plants will not happily coexist in the same pot. That's why I suggest you transfer as much as you can then simpy pull any more that sprout in the cactus pot as though they are weeds.  That way you can manage both plants separately. You received 2 plants for the price of one. Good luck.
