repotting a peace lily

Question
The peace lily that I have tends to droop alot whether it is wet or dry. I would like to repot it. What is the best way to go about doing this. Do I need to put some type of rocks in the bottom of the pot for drainage?

Answer
Karen,

It needs to be in a pot with a hole in the bottom and a drain tray under it. Then a layer of rocks would also be beneficial. If it is drooping a lot it is not healthy. You should also add extra perlite to the new potting soil for better drainage. Use two parts new potting soil and one part new perlite. Try to disturb the roots as little as possible during the repotting and do not move it to a larger pot, just give it fresh better draining soil and put it in a pot the same size as it has been in. This is a plant that likes to be root bound anyway and the roots are probably damaged due to erratic watering so it does not need a larger pot. Fresh soil with more perlite will put more oxygen in the soil and will help rejuvenate the roots and slowly revive the plant. Be patient, do not expect an overnight miracle. It will slowly come back. Do not let it sit in a tray of water, empty the drain tray an hour after watering it and do not let it dry out too much. Good luck.
