How to propagate Ficus

Question
Dear Will Creed,
I have a Ginseng ficus bonsai tree. I would like you to simply teach me how
to propagate it by cutting leef

Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Farhad

Answer
Hi Farhad,

Ficus plants cannot be propagated from leaves, but they can be propagated from stem cuttings.

Remove the bottom one or two leaves of the stem cutting. Insert the bare end of the stem into a very small pot filled with a damp, peat-based potting mix. Then put the pot and cutting inside of a clear plastic bag that you blow up and seal tight. This plastic bag will keep the moisture in the soil and around the leaves. Place this in a location where it gets lots of very bright but indirect natural light. Leave it for 4-6 weeks and then over the course of a week, gradually open and remove the plastic. By then the cutting should have some healthy roots and able to survive on its own. You will then have to start monitoring the watering and gradually increase the light.

BTW, this propagation will create a small Ficus tree but it will not be in the Ginseng bonsai form. That is an art form that takes years of training to develop. I want to be sure you understand that before you proceed.
