treating scale with systemic insecticide

Question
Will a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid kill scale in indoor potted jasmine and lemon trees? What are the use guidelines: ie. the amount to use for a potted plant (12"x18" pots) vs. the recommended amount on the package label for outdoor plants of the same size? Should it be less? And what about the frequency of application? I have 4 small indoor dogs with access to the area where the plants are located. Safe for them? Any other recommendations for the correct application would also be welcomed.  Thank you!  Jan

Answer
Hi Jan,

Imidacloprid is effective in treating scale insects. However, as with any systemic, the active ingredient becomes more dilute as it is absorbed and spread throughout the plant. That means its effectiveness is not so good with large potted plants and trees.

Follow the usage recommendations on the label carefully. There is no difference in dosage between indoor and outdoor ornamentals. Most formulations recommend 1/4 tsp per 2.5 gallons of water. One treatment should be effective, but you may need to follow up if you find live scale a month or more after initial treatment.

The label does list precautions with pest and people. If applied properly, it is probably not hazardous to your pups unless they are inclined to nose around in the treated soil. You may want to check with a vet.

Personally, I choose not to use pesticides because all of them are toxic to people, pets and the environment to varying degrees. I have written an article on treating scale insects and other plant pests without using pesticides that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
