Growing herbs in mason jar containers

Question
I recently planted few different herbs in some old mason jars that I have. I bought and planted seeds for chives, cilantro, and Basil, but I bought an Oregano starter plant. I filled the bottom of the jars with gravel to provide drainage and transfered the plant into the jar. It was doing great for the first couple days... I then moved directly into a window sill and within a couple hours it had started to wilt and had black spots on the leaves... the soil is slightly damp and my house is around 70 degrees... what would you guess is the cause?

Answer
Angie:
Jars are not good starting containers for seeds. Even if you have rocks in the bottom for drainage. There is still moisture in the container that is drawn up to the surface and area. Which may be the cause for wilting & fungus problems. It also need full morning sun and bottom heat. Basil is a must for heat & light to produce well.
