A Nepenthes Cutting

Question
I got a nepenthes spatahula cutting a while ago and i tried to root it in water. Now there is a basal shoot but i don't see any roots.  It loots like the bottom is rotting but the basal shoot looks great.  Is it going to be OK?

Answer
Hi Howard,

It probably is ok.  When Nepenthes start rooting the cut end will often look split and gnarly.  It is often black also.  This usually coincides with the first dormant bud development.  Just give it a little more time, and you'll probably see roots forming.  When the roots are about 1 inch long, transplant to Nepenthes media.  Keep your soil a bit wetter than normal for the first couple of weeks, and give it a weak fertilizer.

Good Growing!
