Leaf Burn

Question
Hi Guys,
I thought I'd take the risk and not acclimatise my VFT. As I
expected I've got leaf burn. Its not shooting out new growth
and the plant has looked miserable for almost month but not
dead. Its just slowly getting more black.

What are your thoughts?

Jake

Answer
With no new growth for a month and signs of it getting more black, the outlook is a bit bleak.  With sudden exposure to lower humidity and sunlight, plants will lose moisture through their leaves.  If the moisture loss is extreme, the plant can die from dehydration, despite have sufficient water in the soil.

There is a chance the plant will survive if the leaf burn was only from sudden exposure to sunlight and not lower humidity.  If this is the case, the leaves are simply burnt and can't perform photosynthesis. To get energy, it will need to use the stored sugars in the bulb.

The only thing you can do is wait.  Sometimes it takes a long time for a plant to produce new growth after a traumatic event such as this.  As long as the bulb is firm and white, there is a chance, but it'll take a long, long time for the plant to look normal.  The new growth will be very small for several months.

My recommendation is to start over and chalk this one up to experience.  For more information about growing flytraps and acclimating them to sunlight and lower humidity, watch Volume 1 of the Grow Carnivorous Plants DVD series.
