temperature to take inside

Question
I have a sundew, a purple pitcher, and Venus flytrap.I live in eastern NC what temperature should i bring them inside?

Answer
Hello Dave,

First off, what kind of sundew do you have? If the Sundew is temperate like the Venus Flytrap and Sarracenia, it will need to stay with those two plants during dormancy. If it is a tropical species, it will need to remain warm and in sunlight, or at least strong florescent light, through winter.

Second, you really do not need to bring the temperate carnivorous plants inside. The Venus Flytrap is native to your state and the Sarracenia has a range that extends even further North of your state. You could simply just leave them outside with some mulch and a tarp over the pot to protect the plants from the worst part of winter freezing if they are in a pot. Pots are not as insulating as the ground so far as plant roots are concerned. Just keep the soil moist, but with only about half the water usually in the tray under the pots.

Send me a follow up with more information (potting arrangement, Sundew species, etc.) about your plants for more specific instructions on their winter care.

Christopher
