yellowing cactus

Question

Cactus
We've had this cactus for a year now and replanted it when we bought it.  We live in Florida and keep in outside on our enclosed patio.  My husband thinks we shouldn't water it much but i wonder if it has too little water.  It's yellowing and now I see red areas.  Can you help us?

Answer
Hello Susan,
This may be caused by 2 reasons: Overwatering or lack of light. My best guess is overwatering. This is called root rotting because the cactus is taking in too much water and causing fungi. Cactus are succulents and will take advantage whenever there is water. Therefore, it will rot with all the watering. It is possible that it may recover, but it may be reluctant. I suggest propagating the good parts before the plant dries completely. Propagation instructions are linked below.
