animals eating annuals

Question
i have a bed of pansies and some look as if they are being eaten by rabbits or deer or some other critters.
do you have any suggestions on how to stop them from being eaten besides putting a fence around them.   i.e. chemicals/spray deterrants etc.
thanks you in advance.

Answer
You can try socalled smell or taste repellants. They usually contain hot pepper wax, coyote urine to discourage browing animals. You can buy brands such as liquid fence, and deer-off (my favorite brand). Avoid "Ropel" it does not work. Deer-off works both on smell and on tastes. Smell alone is usually not enough to keep deer away, but after they eat and find a horrible taste you can keep them abay.

During very heavy deer populations or during periods of the year when little else is growing (winter) it can be almost impossible to keep deer out.

However, reapplied every 2-3 weeks, you can keep them away. Deer-off is expensive.
