Pittosporum Variegated

Question
Hello, I have 3 Pittosporum Variegated shrubs which I planted last spring.  They've been doing really well until the past few weeks, when the leaves of one of the shrubs started to wilt and pale in color.  Eventually the whole shrub died (leaves became tan brown and dried).  Now it looks like the leaves on the other 2 shrubs are doing the same.  I am worried that whatever disease these shrubs have may spread to the other plants in the same area.  I have a Japanese Magnolia, some flowers (annuals), geraniums, azaleas, and 5 small shrubs in that area.  Please help!!!
(FYI: we live in the Southwest)

Answer
You are either watering too much or the plants may have a root rot.  Pittosporums like it in full to moderate sun, no shade.  The problem will not likely spread to the other plants.  Dig up some roots and see if they are black and soft.  If so, there is a root rot.  Cut back on the water in this case.  If the plants continue to check out please respond back and I can recommend a fungicide etreatment that mey help.  Good Luck.
