White & Brown Lumps on Trunk

Tulip Tree Growths Hello Dr Vann,

I have a Tulip Tree in my garden, about 8 years old. Last week I noticed these blobs on the trunk. After looking online I am not really sure whether they are scales, lice or fungi, nor what I should do about them. Your advice would be appreciated.

I have attached an image of the growths.

I'd be suspicious of a type of scale insect. Insecticides containing imidacloprid are effective. If feasible, they should be able to be brushed off if there are just a few. You can carry a few to your local nursery/garden center for an ID- to be sure before buying an insecticide.
