little black flying bugs

Question
bugs are comming out of all my potted plants, indoors of course, I live in Dayton OH., and am raising,a bannana tree, passion flower vines, you name it i probably gotit, i like lots of plants, but not lots of little black flying gnats. Is there a spray something i can buy to kill these guys?

Answer
Kelly,

These are called dark-winged fungus gnats. The larvae live in potting soil where they feed on fungi (see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/fungus_gnat.html for a picture). There's a couple of things you can do to reduce the number of gnats. First, put sticky traps in the pots to trap as many as possible (see the page cited above). Second, cut back on your watering schedule because the flies like damp soil. Third, treat the soil with the nematodes that attack the larvae (see the page cited above). This should reduce the number of gnats to an acceptable level.

Post a follow up if you have questions.
