New Lawn...Hay/Straw Take Over

Question
I live in Cleveland OH. I planted a new lawn 6 weeks ago using 100% Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass. Unfortunately i thought I was using  Straw for cover but may have been provided Hay in error by the garden center. Unfortunately, my lawn is 50% hay/weeds. Please advise what I can do to eliminate the problem. i have been advised to be patient and that the Bluegrass will grow and choke out the Hay. Also that the hay will die out in the fall. I would like to believe this but cannot. Please help!!!

Answer
The best you can do is to mow frequently and low (1.5-2" tall). Eventually the hay will disappear. I do not know if it will be damaged by frost (I depends on the type of hay and whether the crop was used as cool season or warm season crop) but my best advise is to mow frequently and low until you have solved the problem. Also fertilize in spring and fall (primarily fall) and not during hot summer months.
