bent grass elimination

Question
i live in MA. i have an acre of mixed grasses.i cut the lawn 3.5-4.0 in. the bent grass is invading all over the lawn & is brown spots all over. it is to extensive to use round-up & then seed. is there something i can use to kill the bent grass without killing the other grasses?

Answer
Hi Don'
I have no experience with beny grass, but I know of nothing that will kill out one kind of grass and leave the others.
Your agricultural Extension Agent knows all about growing in your area.
I don't use chemicals of any kind, and back when I did, I would not touch roundup.
That stuff kills everything, and is too drastic for even chemical gardeners to use.
I doubt switching to organics would solve that problem, unless the grass is a weed form of bent.
If it grows where there is poor soil, then switching to an organic program and making rich soil would take care of th problem.
Weeds will not thrive in rich soil.
Chemicals DO OT enrich the soil, even though the companies that make them claim they do.
They kill all the beneficial orgnisms in the soil that DO enrich it, wear out, and you have to reapply.
Chemical fertilizerts fertilize the vegetation growing there, including the weeds.
Chemical fertilizers are possibly the worst offenders, even more than the insecticides and weed killers, because they literally lay waste to everything God created in the soil.
An organic program solves so many problems and costs so much less in money and labor, for much better results.
