after soding when to fertilize

Question
Hi,

We live in Fort Worth Texas, and we just laid down a pallet of grass in our front yard we thought it would be a good time since it's been raining every day, we actually did it while it was raining it was a big muddy mess. we would like to know when to fertilize the lady at the sod place said to do it in 45 days but that seems to far away and the sod does not look to green it's more on the yellow side. I'm worried that we paid all that money and that it will die. We did tilt it but like i said it was muddy.

Thank you,

Yvonne

Answer
Dear Yvonne:
It's a wonder that your sod is not floating in the river with all the rain you've received.
I would not worry about the yellow color.  The turf is establishing its root system.  I would also listen to the local supplier.  It's her business and she should give you good information.  Establishment takes a while and the turf will recover rapidly when sufficiently rooted.
Sod gives a (nearly) weed free lawn and is worth the investment.  Be sure not to overfertilize the grass when you do make application.  If a summer type, low rates of N go a long way.
Best of luck.
Tom
