Amending Clay Soil/Lawn

Question
For some reason the answer to this person's question never came through - as follows:

"The best way to turn this Clay soil into one terrific cake is to amend it with organic matter.  Because Earthworms LOVE organic matter.  Because organic matter adds tilth and air.  Because THIS is what your Clay soil is missing.

I'll bet you're imagining someone out there with a shovel and hoe, digging in the hot summer heat, incorporating Humus and Compost.  NOT SO FAST!

The Earthworms who will begin moving in are experts at incorporating your organic matter into your Clay.

And if this sounds just too easy, well, I agree.

It's quite amazing the way Mother Nature works.

All these wonderful things -- the birds and the bees, the Earthworms and the grubs, all living in harmony down there in your rich, dark soil, preparing it for the beautiful grass you are going to put down there.  Boy, I wish I could watch it from my house.  I just love a beautiful green lawn.

Those Japanese Maples are something to behold, too.

Any questions?"

WHAT ARE IS THE ORGANIC MATTER THAT WE SHOULD BE ADDING TO OUR SOIL - WE KNOW IT IS NOT GYPSUM, ETC.  PLEASE DEFINE.  THANKS.

Answer
Sorry, Lisa -- I should have made that clear.  Organic Matter is stuff like Compost, Humus and Aged Manure.

You're absolutely right about the Gypsum.  Gypsum and Lime are things we add to CORRECT the Soil.  Birds, Bees, Earthworms, Grubs, protozoa, Bacteria, Fungi and Nematodes -- none of them care about Gypsum or Lime.  They care about Organic Matter.  They care about Compost, Humus and Aged Manure like your care about Groceries.

You take Grocers home and cook dinner.  They take Organic Matter home and cook dinner.  Same difference.

You must be tearing your hair out by now waiting for this answer.  I am sorry this took a year and a day to get to you.  Way too long at this time of year.  I hope you can get started this weekend.

Thanks for writing back.  Any more questions, let me know.
