lawn damage severe -? grubs - lots of weeds different ones taken over lawn- very little grass!

Question
we hired someone to do our lawn. my husband did the lawn last year and he did not treat for grubs. By mid summer the grass started dying and weeds - different started taking over. What should we do now? Test for grubs, treat and put seeds, and what about the weeds. Do we need to manually pull up weeds, put top soil and then reseed? Do we do this now, or treat for weeds and grubs and wait till to reseed? Please advise. Thank you.  Denise nesfield-Limes

Answer
Hi Denise,

Wow, sounds like you've got quite the plethora of issues to deal with here. I'm not really sure where to start except to say that you might be best off re-sodding in the Spring.

If you're not up for that, then kill the grubs now with a 24 hour grub killer. Then plant the lawn with Kentucky Bluegrass seed heavily and don't worry about the weeds just yet.

The KB will probably not grow until the Spring as the soil is getting too cold now.  Next year you can fertilize, fill in the lawn and then treat for weeds and prevent grubs. This may be a year long process, but there's no reason you can't get things back on track with some diligence.
