wild strawberries taking over lawn

Question
We have a major problem with wild strawberries on all 4 sides of our house.  I was told that the only way to get rid of them (along w/crabgrass & violets) is to completely kill off the yard and start from scratch...meaning, kill everything including the existing grass.  I've read that sugar can do wonders to a yard.  Is this just regular sugar you buy at the store?  And how long will it take to see results.  I'd love the strawberries to stop spreading and be able to have a nice lush lawn.  Very frustrating.

Answer
Hi Ruth.

There are some products which will kill off Wild Strawberry selectively, but they are generally restricted to professional use. I use "Speedzone" with my lawn business, but that isn't approved for use in every state. To get rid of it quickly and simply, you'd have to call in a pro.

I've heard the same claims about table sugar, but I have yet to see it do anything in reality. Unfortunately, researchers won't spend time and effort testing this because there isn't any real scientific grounds for why it would do anything except attract bugs. I can't recommend this in good conscience because I haven't seen it work, and I doubt it would. I can DEFINITELY tell you that it will not suppress weeds.  If it has any benefits, they would be related to increased microbial activity, which helps release natural nutrients to feed the grass (AND the weeds).

I understand you frustration and this is definitely one of the more annoying problems out there. Killing off the whole lawn and starting from scratch would work (if done correctly), but it would also be overkill. Try to find a good treatment company who can apply the right products to take care of it selectively.

Good luck.
