New lawn not sprouting

Question
Hi, we put down a new lawn last Monday in Australia.  Top soil was laid then fertilizer and seeds.  What appears to be the problem is that the seeds are sitting on top of the soil.  What should I do, put mulch on top or rake them under the soil.

Answer
'New Lawn' could be umpteen different Seeds, but a week for most Grass Seed is not a big deal.  Some Seeds take a month to sprout.  If the Seed is old, it's not going to germinate no matter how nice you are to it.  If it's too cold, or too dry, same deal -- no ticky, no shirty.  in Brooklyn, we have an easy answer: No dice.

I have to ask you, there is no mention of the word 'water' in your question.  You did that?

What KIND of Seed did you use?  Bluegrass?  Rye?  Fescue?  Bermuda?  (Australian continent has a panoply of climates and Zones, no?)

rsvp and we'll get to the bottom of this.
