covering tree roots

Question
Can I use coquina rock and pea gravel around live oak tree
roots?  I am concerned about the lime content.
Thank you.

Answer
Hello Marrue

Although I am not familiar with the rock Coquina, I do not feel that the lime content of any gravel could not actually harm an oak tree.

We gardener's do actually 'lime' the soil from time to time and this benefits lime-lovers. Oak trees have hundreds of varieties but I would imagine that we are referring to an Quercus rubra (with bright autumn colour) or one of the other ornamental species. Any of these oak tree varieties should welcome the addition of a lime-based material, so you should be just fine.

Thank you for any bonus points in advance.

Kind regards
