how many heads and stations do I need

Question
QUESTION: hello, I have 3/4 of an acre of land. I would like to know how many sprinkler heads and zones should I have to have an excellent irrigation on my lawn?

ANSWER: Hey Howard, to properly design a system for you, I would need to know what kind of water supply you have, and how many GPM's (gallons per minute) that you are getting out of your water supply. Let me know how many gallons per minute you are getting out of your main water line, and I will design a system for you. E-mail the information in the follow up question box, and I will help you out. Thanks and have a great day.

QUESTION: It will run off regular city water, even though we are right by the lake. I don't know how many GPM, i'm fairly new to this.

Answer
Hey Howard, there is a flow gauge you can buy. Basically it is hooked up to your faucet, and when you turn the faucet on, it will give you the pressure and the gallons per minute. If you did this for a living, I would recommend buying one, but if you only need it for your own yard, it would not be economically feasible to buy one. What you can do is ask the city what kind of pressure they are giving you, or get a pressure gauge and check your pressure at the faucet. And also you can calculate the gallons per minute you are getting out of your faucet by simply getting a 5 gallon bucket, and turning the faucet on all the way, and timing to see how long it takes to fill up the 5 gallon bucket. Lets say it takes 1 minute to fill up the 5 gallon bucket, then the faucet is puttring out 5 gallons per minute. Lets say the bucket fills up in 30 seconds, you would be getting 10 gallons per minute out of your faucet. Try doing this and let me know what you come up with, and how much water pressure you have, and what size line is running from the meter to your house, and we should get a good idea what to design it on. Good luck and let me know.
